Our Story
Why a Mobile Notary Started Fingerprinting People
This service exists because our notary clients asked for a decade straight. Hanson Webb has notarized documents across Massachusetts since 2007. Along the way, a pattern emerged. A nurse signing employment paperwork would ask where to get fingerprinted for her background check. An HR director booking I-9 verifications for ten new hires would ask if we handled the fingerprint cards too. A family finalizing an international adoption needed prints for an FBI report, then an apostille on the report, and had no idea where to start.
The answer used to be a shrug and a referral. Clients drove to police stations with limited public hours. They waited in line, paid cash-only fees, and mailed cards themselves. Weeks later, some got rejection letters because a print was smudged or an ORI number was wrong. Then they started over.
“People kept asking me the same question at signings: where do I get fingerprinted, and why is the process so confusing? After the hundredth time, the answer was obvious. Bring the fingerprinting to them, the same way we brought the notary to them. So we trained, got certified, invested in Live Scan equipment and built the service our clients described. Simple, mobile and affordable.”
Hanson Webb, Owner · NNA Certified Notary since 2007Today that service runs as Fingerprint Boston, our dedicated fingerprinting division. Same owner, same office at 1215 Main St in Tewksbury, same standard of care. The confusing part is our job now. Your job is to show up, or better yet, let us show up to you.
The Basics
What Is Mobile Fingerprinting?
Mobile fingerprinting reverses the traditional model. Instead of you driving to a police station or storefront, a certified technician drives to you. We bring the FD-258 cards, the ink pads, the portable Live Scan scanner and the experience to capture clean, classifiable prints in your conference room, living room or facility.
The prints themselves serve the same purposes as prints captured anywhere else. Employers use them for background checks. Licensing boards use them to screen attorneys, real estate agents, insurance producers and healthcare workers. The FBI uses them to produce your Identity History Summary, the official record required for immigration, foreign visas, adoptions and personal record reviews.
Mobile service matters most in three situations. First, groups: fingerprinting fifteen new hires one at a time wastes fifteen half-days of employee time, while one on-site visit finishes the whole roster in an afternoon. Second, mobility: hospital patients, seniors in care facilities and homebound clients deserve the same access to background checks as everyone else. Third, schedules: business owners and professionals who bill by the hour lose real money sitting in a government waiting room.
Our clients already know this model. We built our reputation on mobile notary service, traveling to homes, hospitals and closings across Massachusetts seven days a week. Fingerprinting extends the same promise to a new document. Often, both happen in a single visit. A new hire completes an I-9 verification and gets fingerprinted in the same twenty minutes. A power of attorney signing at a nursing home doubles as a fingerprint appointment for a caregiver background check.
Choose Your Format
Three Fingerprinting Services, One Provider
Different agencies demand different formats. Some accept only electronic submissions. Others insist on paper cards by mail. A few leave the choice to you. We perform all three, and if your paperwork leaves you unsure, send us a photo of your instructions and we will confirm the right format before your appointment.
Live Scan Fingerprinting
$65
Inkless digital capture transmitted electronically to the requesting agency. The fastest route for state background checks, professional licensing and employment screening. No ink, no mailing, and the lowest rejection rate of any method.
FBI Background Check
$125
Full-service fingerprinting for your FBI Identity History Summary, submitted through an FBI-approved channeler. Required for immigration, foreign visas, international adoption, overseas employment and personal record review.
Ink Card (FD-258)
$49.95
Traditional rolled ink prints on FD-258 cards, prepared to exact FBI specifications for any agency requiring a physical card by mail. Clean, classifiable prints so nothing bounces back weeks later.
Prices reflect in-office service at our Tewksbury location. Mobile visits add a travel fee based on distance and group size. See full pricing.
Why Electronic Wins
How Live Scan Expedites Your Background Report
Here is the practical difference between the two capture methods, in plain terms.
A mailed ink card follows a slow road. You get printed, the card goes in an envelope, the postal service carries it, a clerk opens the mail, a technician scans the card into a digital system anyway, and only then does processing begin. Add days on the front end for mail transit and days on the back end for manual intake. If a print fails quality review, the rejection letter travels the same slow road back to you, and the clock restarts. Total elapsed time: often two to six weeks, sometimes longer.
Live Scan skips almost all of this. The scanner captures your prints digitally, our technician verifies quality on screen before you leave the chair, and the file transmits electronically to the receiving agency or FBI-approved channeler. Electronic FBI submissions frequently process within hours to a few business days. For a nurse waiting to start a job, a contractor waiting for clearance or a visa applicant facing a consulate deadline, the difference between six weeks and three days changes everything.
Speed also comes from quality. The scanner flags a smudged or partial print instantly, and we recapture on the spot. With ink cards, a defect surfaces weeks later in a rejection letter. This is why smudged prints remain the number-one cause of delayed background checks nationwide, and why our technicians treat print quality as the whole job. Since 2007, our standard has been simple: right the first time.
One honest caveat, because you deserve accurate expectations. Final turnaround belongs to the receiving agency, not to us. We control capture quality and transmission speed. Before you leave, we tell you the realistic timeline for your specific submission based on the agency and channel involved.
Common Requirements
Who Needs Fingerprinting in Massachusetts?
Fingerprint-based background checks touch nearly every regulated profession and several major life events. These are the clients we serve every week, and what each one typically needs.
Healthcare and home-care workers
Nurses, CNAs, home health aides and hospital staff face fingerprint-based screening before their first shift. A rejected print delays a start date and a paycheck. We capture to the exact standard your employer’s screening vendor expects, and for facility hiring pushes, we fingerprint the entire cohort on site.
Teachers, school staff and childcare providers
Massachusetts requires national fingerprint-based checks for school employees and childcare workers. We know these forms, the agencies behind them and the timelines principals and daycare directors work against. Schools frequently book our mobile team for staff onboarding days.
Finance, legal and licensed professionals
Attorneys, CPAs, real estate agents, insurance producers, mortgage originators and securities professionals answer to licensing boards requiring fingerprint checks tied to specific ORI numbers and service codes. Bring your instructions and we route the submission correctly. Many of these clients already use us for loan signings and notarizations, so a fingerprint appointment fits naturally into work we already do together.
Immigration, visa and adoption applicants
Foreign governments, USCIS processes and international adoption agencies request the FBI Identity History Summary, and these submissions punish poor print quality. Careful rolling protects your timeline. Most of these clients also need an apostille on the FBI report, which brings us to the service pairing no one else in the area offers under one roof. More on this below.
Employers, HR teams and staffing agencies
Group mobile fingerprinting is our specialty. One visit, one invoice, your whole roster cleared. Pair the visit with I-9 verifications and CORI form notarizations and new-hire compliance finishes in a single appointment instead of three errands per employee.
Drivers, contractors and gig workers
Rideshare platforms, delivery services, transportation companies and the trades require clearance before you earn. We make this step a fifteen-minute stop, not a lost afternoon.
Anyone reviewing their own record
No employer required. If you want to see your own FBI record for peace of mind, to correct an error or to satisfy a foreign government, we help you request the report directly.
Better Together
One Mobile Visit: Notary and Fingerprinting Combined
Documents requiring a notary and processes requiring fingerprints travel together more often than people realize. Adoption dossiers pair notarized affidavits with FBI prints. New-hire packets pair I-9 verifications with background-check fingerprints. Licensing applications pair notarized forms with Live Scan submissions. Estate and guardianship matters pair power of attorney signings with caregiver screening.
Booking two separate providers for these means two appointments, two travel fees, two schedules to coordinate and two chances for something to slip. Booking us means one trained professional arrives with a notary seal and a fingerprint kit, and both tasks finish before the coffee gets cold.
For businesses, the math is direct. An HR manager onboarding five employees saves roughly a full workday by replacing five individual errands with one 90-minute on-site visit. For families handling an adoption or an elder-care transition, the savings are measured in stress rather than hours, and those matter more.
International Documents
FBI Fingerprinting Plus Apostille: The One-Stop Solution
If you are moving abroad, applying for a foreign visa, marrying overseas or completing an international adoption, a plain FBI background report is not enough. Foreign governments in Hague Convention countries require an apostille on the report: a federal certification from the U.S. Department of State confirming the document’s authenticity. Learn the full process on our Department of State authentication guide.
This chain has three links, and each one confuses people who face the process for the first time. Link one: get fingerprinted correctly. Link two: submit the prints and obtain the FBI Identity History Summary. Link three: send the report to the U.S. Department of State for the apostille, with the exact cover letter, fees and formatting the office requires. Break any link and the chain restarts. We have watched clients lose two months to a single formatting error on a self-submitted apostille request.
We handle the entire chain. Your fingerprints, your FBI report and your apostille, processed by one accountable provider from a real office in Tewksbury. No handoffs between vendors, no wondering which company holds your documents this week, no conflicting instructions from three different websites. State-issued documents work the same way: we apostille birth certificates, marriage certificates, diplomas and corporate records through the Secretary of State, and we serve clients in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.
Ready to start the international chain? Complete our apostille application or book your fingerprint appointment first at fingerprintboston.com/contact. Either door leads to the same team.

Come Prepared
What to Bring to Your Fingerprinting Appointment
A few minutes of preparation keeps your appointment short and your submission clean. Bring these four things:
A valid, unexpired government photo ID. Driver’s license, state ID, military ID or passport. The name on your ID must match the name on your application. Name mismatches are the second most common cause of rejected submissions, right behind print quality.
Your agency’s instructions. ORI numbers, OCA numbers, service codes or specific forms tell us exactly where your prints go. Photograph and send them before your appointment and we verify everything in advance.
Any blank cards you were sent. Some agencies mail their own FD-258 cards. Bring them. Forgot, or never received any? We stock cards, so nothing stops your appointment.
Payment. We accept major credit cards, PayPal and Apple Pay at the time of service.
For international matters, also bring the destination country’s requirements so we scope the apostille work in the same conversation.

Four Mistakes That Delay Fingerprint Submissions
Most fingerprinting delays trace back to a handful of preventable errors. We see the aftermath weekly: clients arriving at our office after a rejection letter, weeks behind on a job start or visa deadline. Here is what went wrong, and how our process prevents each one.
Mistake 1: Poor print quality
Smudged, partial or over-inked prints are the leading cause of rejected submissions nationwide. Do-it-yourself kits and rushed high-volume counters produce most of them. Print quality comes down to pressure, rolling technique and a technician who checks every finger before you leave. Our certified staff has rolled prints since 2007, and Live Scan adds a second safeguard by flagging weak captures on screen for instant redo.
Mistake 2: Wrong or missing routing numbers
Every fingerprint submission carries routing data: an ORI number identifying the receiving agency, sometimes an OCA number or a service code. Enter the wrong one, or leave the field blank, and your perfectly rolled prints arrive at the wrong desk or nowhere at all. We verify these numbers against your paperwork before capture, which is why we ask you to send a photo of your instructions when you book.
Mistake 3: Name and ID mismatches
The name on your application, your ID and your fingerprint card must match. Recently married applicants, clients with hyphenated names and anyone whose ID shows a middle initial their application omits run into this constantly. We compare all three at the appointment and fix discrepancies before submission, not after a rejection.
Mistake 4: Choosing the wrong format entirely
Some clients pay for Live Scan when their agency accepts only mailed cards. Others mail cards to agencies with electronic-only intake. Both errors mean paying twice. Your requesting agency’s instructions control the format, and reading those instructions is part of our service, at no extra charge. When the paperwork is ambiguous, we contact the agency and get a straight answer.

Mobile Fingerprinting FAQ
What is mobile fingerprinting?
Mobile fingerprinting means a trained technician travels to your home, office or facility to capture your fingerprints, instead of you traveling to a police station or print shop. Prints are captured on FD-258 cards or portable Live Scan equipment and submitted to the requesting agency for a background check, license or FBI Identity History Summary.
How much does mobile fingerprinting cost in Massachusetts?
In-office pricing starts at $49.95 for FD-258 ink cards, $65 for Live Scan and $125 for a full FBI background check. Mobile visits add a travel fee quoted upfront, and group rates for employers make on-site visits the most affordable option per person. Full details at fingerprintboston.com/pricing.
What is the difference between Live Scan and ink card fingerprinting?
Live Scan captures prints digitally and transmits them electronically, which speeds up background report delivery and lowers rejections. Ink cards roll prints onto a physical FD-258 card for agencies requiring paper by mail. Your requesting agency decides which format applies. Unsure? Send us your instructions and we confirm before your appointment.
How fast will my FBI report come back with Live Scan?
Electronic submissions through an FBI-approved channeler often process within hours to a few business days. Mailed paper cards typically take two to six weeks. Final turnaround is set by the FBI and the requesting agency, and we give you a realistic expectation for your specific submission before you leave.
Do you provide fingerprinting and apostille service together?
Yes, and this pairing is our specialty. We fingerprint you, obtain your FBI Identity History Summary and process the U.S. Department of State apostille on the report for international use. One provider, one accountable team, zero handoff errors. Start with our apostille application form.
Can you fingerprint a group of employees at our office?
Yes. On-site group fingerprinting is one of our most requested services. HR teams, schools, healthcare facilities and staffing agencies book a single visit, and we clear the whole roster with volume pricing. Pair the visit with I-9 verifications and CORI notarizations to finish onboarding compliance in one appointment.
What if my fingerprints get rejected?
Rejections are rare with careful capture, which is exactly why our technicians verify every print before you leave. If an agency ever rejects a print for quality, we re-roll and resubmit. Talk to us and we make it right.
Can you fingerprint children or entire families?
Yes. We fingerprint minors and families regularly, usually for adoption, immigration or travel. Bring ID for the adults plus any forms the agency provided. Mobile family appointments at home work especially well with young children.
